Free For All Friday No. 327 by Anita

My Mum is currently visiting and I bought a pack of playing cards as I remember us playing quite a bit of Rummy when I was growing up. We stayed up late last night chatting, drinking tea and playing cards and it was very relaxing. It occurred to me that in this digital age that something like playing cards or using a Filofax gives me a break from looking at a screen, and I think that it does me good. I find that my binder helps me slow down, focus and I am more committed to completing items on my to-do lists when I write them, rather than typing. When I've been at work all day, it's nice to sit down with my Filofax, a good book and my cat on my lap for a change of pace.

Sometimes people assume that I'm anti-technology because I use a planner, do you also experience this?

And as it's Friday, please feel free to discuss anything ring-binder related. Have a great weekend.

  1. I don't see it as digital vs paper. Even Filofax has recognised in the past couple of years that the best way forward is when you combine the strengths of each. All my appointments, tasks, projects, contacts, to-do lists and core information have long been on my iPad and iPhone. But when I want to develop a strategy, look at some long-range planning, mind-mapping some problem or preparing a speech or even scribbling some message when I've stopped in the hills to take an "urgent" phone call - that, for me, is when I will defend a paper system to the hilt!

  2. It is surprising how in 2015 computer programmers are still using 3x5 cards to track the progress of their software ... however I don't think it should be either or they can play quite nicely together once given the chance....

  3. My partner is a software engineer and I find it quite amusing when we are out on the weekends and he asks me if I have my "book" so that I can write down something for him even though he has his iPhone 6 Plus with him!

  4. Good morning All (I'm in US, so it is morning). I have personal size Saffiano and am considering an A5 to use as a home maintenance/ reference binder. Do the holes match up? I know this has been discussed before, but my brain isn't ready to work yet. Please pass the coffee.

Answering Anita's question, my planner and iPhone have thankfully learned to work as a team. Or rather, I've figured out what works best for me, of each format.

This is my third try. If it shows up 3 times, my apologies. Where that coffee?

    1. When you say 'do the holes match up' do you mean, will personal paper fit in the A5? If so, the answer is yes, BUT you will have to slice a small triangle off the bottom left-hand corner of the personal page (not much) to make it work (as there is another ring in the A5 which coincides with that bottom corner). Hope that makes sense.

    2. One thought more: if you go for a mulberry binder in A5 size the rings match up perfectly with the personal filofax ring spacing. They in fact have the same meassures

  6. Hi everyone!
Apologies this is late for the Free For All Friday (sorry Steve...) I've got a burning question I really really want answering or some help on if you can!
I've just purchased a Temperley Filofax (the Guinea). While I'm waiting for it to arrive I'm doing what every other Filofax Fanatic would do - pre-planning the move, scrapping, adding to and re-jigging sections etc.
I know that this planner has no inserts, however after research online, I really like the idea of the Temperley Inserts...!
So, my question is this: does anyone know where I can get the Temperley inserts from? I don't want to have to purchase another planner to get these, if you know what I mean? Or perhaps if anyone knows of any scanned prints of the inserts?
Steve please feel free to delete this post if you feel it is inappropriate. :)
    Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi there,
One particular seller seems to have got a load of these from somewhere and is selling them off. But all without the inserts.

Someone else that bought one shared photos of it with me. Looking back at the original inserts which are just personal size after all. What I would do is just fill it using the higher quality Cotton Cream inserts of your choice. The specialist ones that were included in some case where not inserts but just small leaflets.

The dividers where just cream with black tabs I think. You could get the leather tabs on Etsy I think, but I can't find them now!

Or may be something like this:

I guess you have seen this post: http://philofaxy.blogspot.com/2012/03/new-limited-edition-temperley-london.html

    2. Hi Steve
Interesting to find out about the seller getting a load from somewhere all without inserts...! I wonder if that's my seller!
I mainly do use cotton cream inserts but I like to manipulate your's and Ray's designs to my needs on blank cotton cream paper. I didn't realise the majority of the "Temperley" specific inserts were leaflets... thinking about it now maybe I'll pass on those.
I LOVE the idea of those leather look tab dividers, thank you so much for pointing me in that direction... I'll definitely be looking into those.
After re-reading the post from 2012, there was a lot of hatred for the collaboration, I never really realised that until now. I'll have to do a review on it once I receive, as I can't really find many reviews on the Guinea (especially on youtube!).
Thank you so much for your help Steve - you truly are "The GodFaxer"!

  7. Yes I completely agree with the break thing. I think that is one of the biggest benefits of doing something on paper, like planning or writing: you just get to relax and focus and the quality of your work is somehow better. Also, it is a lot more enjoyable!
The only problem is all these blogs and instagram pictures and such about planners, they are so fun but so distracting...

  8. Most of the people I know use technology for scheduling. There are some that carry a thin notebook calendar with no coil or a small pocket binder. The point is streamlined. I have heard some comments on my Franklin pocket binder. Regardless of the comments I have toned down and pared down items in it because I prefer the clean look. I have always favored the Filofax dividers that have printed tabs and I cut them to fit in my binder. The paper is ideal for small rings in that it is not thick like card stock. As my internet was down for a short while I enjoyed the time away from it.

  9. I love my iPhone, tablets, etc., and am known for this amongst my friends. But I will never use them for recording my daily life and events for one simple reason. How many people have the same cellphone now as they did 3-5 years ago? The iPad I bought in 2010 had to be replaced three years later as apps and the OS would no longer update. Anyone remember those fancy PDA's from not so very long ago? I can't even say how often I've needed to refer to old planners to determine when certain medical things happened, trips were taken, events were planned, major purchases made and so on. A long time insurance claim from an old accident is still open in our family, and that record has been invaluable as well. Platforms and technology will continue to change and obsolesce; if paper is not forever, it sure as heck comes a lot closer. ;-)
